Book 2000

Collection of lyrics, written for the Dutch tv series Het Klokhuis, illustrated by Flemish poet-illustrator André Sollie, published May 2000 by Leopold, Amsterdam: Het is een straf als je zo mooi moet zijn als ik (It's punishment to be as beautiful as I am):

O help, hier wordt een moord gepleegd, zo sprak een edelvrouw.
Straks wordt mijn lichaam opgeveegd, want kijk, hier zit een vouw
en hier een rimpel, enzovoort, en hier een kraaiepoot.
De tijd beraamt een laffe moord, o hemel, ik ga dood!

Toen ging de dame aan de slag en brouwde in een pot
een smeerseltje van spinnerag en spuug en stukjes snot.
Dit spatelde zij op haar huid en na een dag of tien
zag heel haar vel er gladjes uit: er was geen groef te zien.

Zij vulde tubes met de crème en bracht die aan de man.
Zij werd met versies haar en hem er zeer welvarend van.
Toch stierf zij na een maand of drie, al was ze nog zo rijk:
het leven is een allergie; elk mens wordt eens een lijk.

Nu ligt zij dan tentoongesteld, heel zwaar geparfumeerd.
Zij is verstoken van haar geld, maar mooi geconserveerd.

ISBN

Each book has its own identity: a code that starts with "ISBN" and is followed by numbers. The first part of those numbers identifies the country in which the book is published, the middle part says what publisher put the book on the market, and the last numbers say, in code, what book it is. If you're on a holiday in the Netherlands and you ask: "Do you have the book Brothers by Ted van Lieshout?", then they probabely don't know the answer. But if you ask: "Do you have ISBN 0.00.711231.9." then you might get this answer: "You're searching for a book that has been published in Great Britain; here in Holland we have that same book in the original language: 90.00.03097.8."
